History

The Gallery of Art in Legnica was founded in 1971. It inherited from previously existing institutions under the name of:

• BWA Wrocław Representation in Legnica (1971-1978) – a branch of the central and national institution of the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Wrocław (BWA)

• BWA Legnica (25.01.1978-12.07.1992) – an independent branch of the Gallery of Contemporary Art (Legnica, 1 Chopin Square). In the meantime it brought branches in Lubin (1981-1989) and Głogów (1983-1989) into existence.

• State Gallery of Art in Legnica (13.07.1992-1999), Legnica,
  1 Cathedral Square

• Gallery of Art in Legnica (since 1999)

In 1972-1989 the gallery, while still a part of BWA, was called the Black Gallery and was situated opposite the present location. The exhibition room was moved to the present location at the turn of 1991/1992, whereas the offices had been performing their duties since 1983. Chopin Square was renamed Cathedral Square in 1989, leaving the previous building numbers intact.

Since 1971 the Gallery has been governed by:

1. Henryk Baca (01.05.1971-31.03.1975) – the manager of BWA Wrocław Representation in Legnica
2. Hanna Krzewska (1975-1981) – the manager of BWA Wrocław Representation in Legnica
3. Jan Bocheński (1981-1990) – the manager of BWA Legnica
4. Leszek R. Rozmus (1990-1998) – the manager of the State Gallery of Art in Legnica
5. Zbigniew Kraska (since 1998) – the manager of the State Gallery of Art in Legnica (1998-1999), the manager of the Gallery of Art in Legnica (since 1999)
