The Legnica Festival of Silver SILVER 2008

On the 16th and 17th May 2008 took place culmination of The Legnica Festival of Silver SILVER 2008. Venture was organized with a flourish, the events took place in seven exhibition spaces and in open air. The rich programme included: exhibitions, popular science session, jazz concert, happenings and social meetings. At the eight exhibitions were presented 380 works of 150 artists from 17 countries.

The main event of the Festival was the opening ceremony of the exhibition of the 17th International Silverart Competition EXCLUSIVE during which there were announcing the names of prizewinners and awards were given (Grand Prix won Jacek Ryń from Gdańsk, Poland). Superb participants of the exhibition EXCLUSIVE - beside the jurors of the competition: Karl Fritsch, Ted Noten, Sławomir Fijałkowski, Jacek Byczewski – were special guests: Felieke van der Leest from The Netherlands, Kadri Mälk from Estonia, Joachim Sokólski from Poland, Klaus Ullrich from Germany, Eeva Wornell from Finland, Michael Zobel from Germany.

Also other exposition of the Festival – in guests opinion – are very interesting and valuable, starting from SILVER SCHOOLS (Academies form Bratislava and Prague, University form Lappeenranta from Finland), through DEBUTS of Jakub Śliwowski, and ending with the cycle ABOUT THE ARTISTS (Andrzej Bandkowski, Vrativalv Karel Novák, Aneta Lis-Marcinkiewicz and Adriana Lisowska). In last moment was montaged – not planned earlier – exhibition “Stay moment! You are so fair!” which has been arranged at the International Baltic Jewellery Show “Amber Trip” from Vilnius.

Intensive day was ended Traditionally in Rock Pub Spiż from which last guests left about five o’clock in the morning.
It is too early for the final résumé of the Festival, but its laconic summary made by the present at the Festival participants, guests and audience sound positively, what gives us – organizers - sense for our work and hope for good future of this event, which good we have at heart.

257 WORKS, 128 COMPETITORS, 4 JURORS
AN ACCOUNT OF THE DELIBERATIONS OF THE JURY
17th International Silverart Competition Exclusive
The last week was heated not only for the Polish Post Service and courier service delivering parcels with works for the 17th International Silverart Competition Exclusive at the Art Gallery in Legnica to the last minute, but, first and foremost, for the jurors: T. Noten, K. Fritsch, J. Byczewski, S. Fijałkowski, who had to select works, out of 257 works sent to the competition, for a post-competition exhibition and award prizes. It is worth mentioning that out of 128 competitors, the majority was formed by Poles – 78, next Germans – 19, Italians – 6 and Japanese people – 5, but other countries, including Spain, America, Korea, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Switzerland, Hungary, Finland, Denmark, Mexico, Estonia, Israel and Belgium, were also represented. All in all, there were representatives of 17 countries. The deliberations chaired by Ted Noten were carried out extremely efficiently: the jurors did not take long to choose above-average works.
Despite geographical, cultural and outlook differences of the competitors, it could be observed in their responses to the topic of the competition (Exclusive) that they think in a similar vein and have similar associations. Bread – as still indispensable, yet quite often an exclusive product in the modern world – was a recurring material in many works. And similarly, water, getting more and more exclusive, was present in the works.
There were also less global and ecological approaches to the concept of exclusiveness: several works, in which diamonds or almost “diamonds” and such which resembled brilliant cuts were used, confirmed that although they are apparently common and used to make engagement rings on a mass scale, diamonds still are a synonym for exclusiveness.
As it often happens during Legnica competitions, there were also subtle and philosophical works indicating the subject and not the object of exclusiveness and a lot of funny and witty references to the products of mass culture and values of the modern world, and, in particular, man living in the space controlled by advertising, giving a consumer an unshaken illusion of exclusiveness.
Among the works sent, there were both critical works and such dealing with the topic with indulgence; there were works providing both strong reflections and shocking conclusions.
In spite of these facts, the jurors had no problems choosing the winners of the 17th International Silverart Competition Exclusive. The other prizes included: a commendation of the Art Gallery in Legnica and a prize of Goldsmithing Artists' Association, a commendation granted by the Amber Association and JPJ Company. Ia addition, a prestigious artistic magazine EXIT and Polska Biżuteria chose their favourite artist for the first time. The names of the winners will be kept in secret until the date of the exhibition, i.e. 17 May. As early as today we invite all the artists, enthusiasts and fans of goldsmithing to take part in Legnica Festival of Silver.
