Results of
16th International Silverart Competition


On 11th and 12th day of April 2007 in the Art Gallery in Legnica took place jury deliberations of the 16th International Goldsmithery Competition ABSOLUTE BEAUTY.

On the Jury sat the following people:
Maryla Dubiel (Poland) - the goldsmith artist, the owner of the Dubiel Gallery in Warsaw, the member of the Association of Authors of Goldsmithery Forms; Marie-José van den Hout (Netherlands) - critic of the art, independent curator, runs the prestigious, known in the world gallery of contemporary jewellery Marzee in Nijmegen (Netherlands); Sławomir Fijałkowski (Poland) - lecturer in the Academy of Fine Arts in ŁódĽ and lecturer in the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, designs author's jewellery, is collaborates with leading jeweller's companies; Giedymin Jabłoński (Poland) - the independent artist, the theoretician of the art, the author of numerous publications in periodicals and catalogues in the field of jewellery; Ruudt Peters (Netherlands) - the goldsmith artist, the lecturer, the dean of the Department of the Amsterdam Jewellery Gerrit Rietveld Academie, the Opere International Jewellery School founder, (Netherlands); Petry Michael (England) - the artist dealing with installing, director of London Museum of Contemporary Art, the Royal lecturer at Royal College of Art and Royal Academy Schools.

308 works of 181 artists from 28 countries were entered to the competition. Registrations for the competition came from the whole Europe: from Poland, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain, England, Portugal, Hungary, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Austria, Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine, Russia, as well as from the United States of America, Colombia, Japan, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea and Egypt.

Jurors' comment after deliberations was as follows "we were fully conscious that absolute beauty doesn't exist, due to which the variety of unique and unexpected interpretations didn't surprise us at all. Moreover, thanks to the personal and professional experience we were able to feel and appreciate the beauty included in the work we chose. It is our desire that this exhibition impels each of the addressees to their own, individual reflections on what the beauty is or may be”.

The jury pointed unanimously 13 explicitly outstanding in their opinion works, as well as categorised the remaining objects into the exhibition. Moreover, the commission selected 6 works of five authors to the common exhibition, who answering the subject of the competition followed similar association track and used resembling/similar artistic form. Therefore the group constitutes aesthetically compatible exhibition. The Association of Ambersmiths and JPJ company also granted their own awards. The announcement of prizewinners' surnames and solemn awarding of prizes of the 16 International Goldsmithery Competition absolute beauty will take place during the vernissage, on 19th day of May 2007 year, at 6.30 p.m. You are warmly welcome!

Programme

Post-competition exhibition will be presented in the Art Gallery exhibition halls in Legnica from 28.04 to 03.06.2007.

MARIE-JOSE VAN DEN HOUT
Graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts. Director of existing since 1978 and currently the biggest gallery of contemporary jewellery in western Europe - the Marzee gallery, Nijmegen, Netherlands. The curator of many exhibitions of artistic jewellery, which were being presented e.g. in Orfebres FAD, Barcelona, Spain; Flow Gallery, London, England; Alternatives Gallery, Rome, Italy; the Reverso Gallery, Lisbon, Portugal; Velvet da Vinci Gallery, San Francisco, USA; Mobilia Gallery, Cambridge MA, USA, the Bielak Gallery, Cracow, Poland. The originator and curator of Annual International Graduation Show, the exhibition accompanying MIDORA fair, presenting works of the European artistic universities graduates.

MARYLA DUBIEL has dealt with jewellery since 1994. The member of the Association of Authors of Goldsmithery Forms since 1996. Participant in many exhibitions and competitions in Poland and abroad. In Warsaw she runs the gallery linked to the atelier. She participated in over 30 exhibitions and competitions in the country and in the world, among others in Warsaw, Legnica, Cracow, Kazimierz Dolny, Gdańsk, Brno, Koeln, New York, Munich, Copenhagen, Florence, London and Milan. Her works are in the collection of the Museum of Goldsmithery Art in Kazimierz Dolny.

RUUDT PETERS Born in 1950 in Naaldwijk, Netherlands. He lives and works in Amsterdam. Co-founder of the Ekster Gallery, Leeuwarden (1973-1978); Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Constantijn Huygens teacher, Kampen (1983-1990); dean of the Jewellery Department of Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam (1990-2000); the Opere International Jewellery School founder, Netherlands (2001); lecturer at Ädellab Metaldepartment Konstfack University College of Arts, Craft and Design, Stockholm Sweden (2004); the SCHMUCK 2006 juror, Munich, Germany. GIEDYMIN JABŁOŃSKI
Born in 1946 in Gdańsk. He studied physics and architecture (1963-70). Since 1970 has worked as an independent artist. He deals with criticism and the theory of art, author of numerous publications in periodicals and catalogues. Author of the project of Amberif fair in Gdańsk, the initiator of the Elektronos competition, the juror and curator of many exhibitions. Lecturer: The Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (1974 - 77, 1991 -93), The Multimedia Academy in Gdańsk (1995 - 2001), Royal College of Art in London (2001). Workshops, seminars, lectures - among others: St. Petersburg - Ermitaż, Loughborough University, London Guildhall University, Toruń - The Regional Museum, Gdańsk - The Archeological Museum, Legnica - The Art Gallery. Participant in over 100 exhibitions in Poland and abroad (Spain, Germany, Italy, Finland, Austria, Great Britain, Mexico, Bulgaria, Russia). Works in public collections in the country: Castle Museum in Malbork, The Museum of the Earth in Warsaw, The Regional Museum in Gliwice, The Historic Museum in Gdańsk, The Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk, and in foreign countries: Regional Museum in Turnów (Czech Republic).

PETRY MICHAEL
Born in 1960 in El Paso, Texas. Since 1981 has lived and worked in London. Museum manager of Contemporary Art (MOCA); London, the co-founder of The Museum of Installing; Royal College of Art and Royal Academy Schools lecturer; curator of Royal Academy Schools Gallery; the Kunst Akademy curator, Oslo; research coordinator at the Wolverhampton University. Author of many individual exhibitions e.g.: The Space Between: Superstring Installation I, Art Complexity & Technology Confrence, Turin, Italy (2005); WAS: white as snow, Devin Borden Hiram Butler Gallery, Houston, USA (2004); The Milky Way and other Fairy Tales, Sundaram Tagore Gallery, New York, USA (2003); The Sound of Breaking Glass, Prowler Project Space, London, Great Britain (2003) and participant in several dozens collective exhibitions among others: Hidden Histories: 20th Century Male Same Sex Lovers in the Visual Arts, The New Art Galery, Walsall, Great Britain (2004); Sex for Sale, Independence Show, South London Galery, London, Great Britain (2003); The Axis, 'In the Gloaming', ArtOMI, Hudson, New York, USA; Pearl Paintings, Sundaram Tagore Gallery, New York, USA (2003). In year 2001 Art Media Press publishing company published the monograph of his current artistic activity titled Trouble with Michael. Petry is the co-author of books: Installation Art (Thames & Hudson, 1994), Installation in the New Millennium (Thames & Hudson, 2003), and the author of Abstract Eroticism (Academy Editions, 1996) and A Thing of Beauty is... (Academy Editions thing, 1997). The newest Petry's book Hidden Histories: 20th century male alone sex lovers in the visual arts (2004) is the first full review of this type. SŁAWOMIR FIJAŁKOWSKI
Born in 1970 in ŁódĽ. PWSSP graduate in ŁódĽ, Studio of Jewellery Design(1995). Post-graduate study in Hochschule für künstlerische und industrielle Gestaltung in Linz in Austria (1996 - 98). A two-time scholarship holder of the Minister of the Culture and Art, as well as of the Batory Foundation, the Vienna Foundation for Cultures - Contact and of Austrian Ministry of the Science and Research. Currently lecturer in The Academy of Fine Arts (ASP) in ŁódĽ and lecturer in The Academy of Fine Arts (ASP) in Gdańsk. Over 40 individual and group exhibitions among others in Poland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Netherlands, Great Britain, USA. Apart from the author's jewellery he also deals with designing application objects and jewellery in co-operation with leading jewellery companies - presentation of the collection in significant exhibition events of the goldsmithery trade in the world (among others Bazylea, Vicenza, Munich, Las Vegas, Orlando, Tokyo).
